Stories of the Road – The Top of the World and Chicken

In the summer of 2016, Henderson Productions and Poggio Amorelli B&B set off for a culinary and photographic journey through British Columbia, the Yukon Territory and Alaska.    Stories of the Road is a series of snippets of that journey.   Stay tuned over the coming months for additional stories of this and other journeys.

It was noon when we crossed the Yukon River on a free ferry out of Dawson City and began the Top of the World Highway to Chicken, Alaska.    The first 50 miles or so was packed chip and seal road with a definite periodic washboard effect and a slower tempo.  It travels all along the ridgeline and winds from spectacular view to spectacular view.   The Canadian side was well maintained with even grades and gravel packed tightly.

There are places on the Klondike Highway which test your dentist’s abilities.    Seriously.   Any one of us could have shaken out loose fillings at multiple locations along the way.    Even today, it’s a definite test of endurance and proper load management and sense of humor.    We did pretty well.

Stories of the Road – on the Way to Dawson Creek and the Alaska Highway

Spent the early morning cruising through some lovely little towns.  Quesnel was the largest with at least 2 stoplights and tons of flower beds lining the highway through town.   Annuals.   Hand planted.   For at least 4 miles on both sides.   It’s indicative of the gorgeous flowers we’ve seen everywhere.   Even caught a pic of huge baskets hanging above the gas pumps during one stop.

Stories of the Road – Coal Mine Campground and the Yukon River

We landed for the evening at The Coal Mine Campground just north of Carmacks alongside the swiftly flowing Yukon River with a “famous” burger bar attached and a chatty hostess in Samantha.  While moving sprinklers around to tiny patches of grass between RV spots she told me “We’re in the banana belt of the Yukon.  It’s usually rainy enough I don’t need to do this but people want a little patch of green so…” and she continued sprinkling the patch.    “We moved here 17 years ago and… Continue reading

Stories of the Road – The Yukon

It’s clear I’m the early bird in our bunch and I make every effort to quietly get up in a creaky barge to sit and write with a throw over my lap or open the door – creeeeeeeek, squeeeeeeek, thump – and go out for a long sunrise walk as I’ve done the last couple of days.

I wrote and prepared some emails in the RV before the sun came up and then went for a long walk around the adjacent lake w camera in one hand and laptop on my shoulder.… Continue reading

Uniform, USAF

USAF 70’s era utility uniform with buck sergeant stripes

It’s been 20 years since he retired from the USAF.  And when he does the math he’s stunned to realize it’s been another 20 since he drove the Alaska Canada Highway from Fairbanks to Dawson City and all the way to Sacramento to get married.    It’s clear it’s a million years ago and yet every turn of the road is a returned memory –“it wasn’t this paved back then”…..”I don’t remember this blue lake, maybe it was night when… Continue reading

Anticipation: A Journey Before the Journey

Anticipation.   (Can we even say it without hearing the song?) Funny thing – preparing for a trip. There’s the logistics and the cultural, the spiritual and the physical.   There’s prepping what is left behind and rushing to get things done on the home front before actual departure.

My process almost always begins more than a year in advance with the idea.   Then the gathering begins – books to read, people to ask about the locale, determining credible sources. By six months prior a huge pile to… Continue reading

It was a Sunday morning so we opted to drop into the Tesla River Lodge and Campsites for their ”world-famous cinnamon buns”.   Gail tells us they only do one thing so they can do it extremely well.   Indeed.   At $5 CN (about $4 US) two of us couldn’t finish one.   Yummy.   The lodge was spacious and comfortable and it would have been worthy of a night or two if we weren’t pressing on the road and self-contained. But I was most entertained… Continue reading
